Celebrate the 400th year of Galileo's discovery of the telescope with a Princeton/all Ivy Star viewing party at Mt Wilson Observatory. During the first half of the 20th century, Mt. Wilson Observatory, founded by George Ellery Hale, was the preeminent astronomical observatory in the world. No other observatory boasted the quality of Mt. Wilson’s staff or its instruments. It was the prototype of modern observatories and is where astrophysics came of age. Today many other observatories have larger telescopes but none since has occupied the unique place in astronomy that Mount Wilson did. It was here that scientists first discovered the sun is not the center of the Milky Way. Galaxies other than the Milky Way first became known when their spiral images and vast distances amazed astronomers. Basic elements of modern astronomy such as the sun’s magnetic field, and varying ages of stars, first emerged here at Mount Wilson. And the fleeing tracks of other galaxies created the premise for the Big Bang theory. This unique evening begins with a discussion of the history of the renowned Mt. Wilson Observatory*. A light evening meal will also be provided. The discussion will be followed by a special docent-led tour of the observatory and a half night of observing with the 60” telescope. Legends such as Albert Einstein, Edwin Hubble and George Hale once walked the grounds here, and now you will too. Click here to RSVP & buy tickets!!! DETAILS: Discussion, light meal, docent tour and 60” telescope star viewing session til 1:00am. Event is limited to 25 people.
