The Project's second year took got underway on good ground in the fall of 2005. Thanks to Lisa Gok '76, the then Assistant Regional Director of Enforcement at the Securities and Exchange Commission's office in Los Angeles, Ralph J. Bunche Elementary and East LA 's Utah Street Elementary were among several schools eligible to receive Dell computers. The Los Angeles SEC office replaced 70 computers and, following a presidential executive order, donated the hardware to schools. This was a wonderful and unexpected opportunity for these two schools.
Cynthia Lazaroff '81, Executive Vice President of the Planetary Coral Reef Organization, visited Bunche and spoke to the school children about the health of the oceans and the coral reefs around the world. Her goal was to empower young people to act locally to preserve our global treasures. Learn more about the PCRF at www.pcrf.org.
Also this fall, Mitch Metcalf '87, NBC Senior VP of Program Planning and Scheduling, returned to Bunche with an NBC reporter and news truck. The NBC staff helped Ms. Martinez' fifth grade class produce a news program based on students' experiences in their homes, community, and school. The finished product was staged and filmed with the help of NBC.
